32. Stuttgarter Filmwinter — Festival for Expanded Media

Exploring the intersections of performing arts, film, media art and network culture

Future Festival Locations

The 32nd Stuttgart Filmwinter - Festival for Expanded Media – will take place from 17 to 20 January 2019. After a long journey since the closure of the Filmhaus, the association Wand 5 e.V., which hosts the renowned festival, has found a place to stay in the premises of FITZ! Zentrum für Figurentheater and theater tri-bühne.
"We are very glad about this perspective and are very much looking forward to working together with our wonderful cooperation partners in order to explore the intersections of performing arts, film, media art and network culture", say festival directors Giovanna Thiery and Marcus Kohlbach. Another cooperation partner is Kunstbezirk Stuttgart, where the expanded media exhibition will be seen.

Thematic Focus “Wake Me Up”

The Stuttgart Filmwinter - Festival for Expanded Media addresses his concerns:
In the tension between true dreams of moving images, that seem to be wide awake, and a reality, that has gone to sleep, it is the role of film artists, media artists and net artists to wake us up. In this sense, the motto "Wake Me Up" is meant to be a wake-up call and is aimed at an art that takes action in new forms of authorship, freed from the pressures of producing a message, the pressures of marketing, trends and content obligations. Which role do new forms of artistic collectives and working methods play? What are the perspectives and new ways of seeing in our digital society? The program "Wake Me Up" will shed light on this thematic focus.

Short films, Media Art, Network Culture, AV Performances and Workshops

At the core of the festival and for the 32nd time now are the best submissions from the international competition categories for short film, Media in Space and Network Culture – a diversified supporting programme featuring retrospectives, concerts, performances and lectures by international artists completes the nationally renowned film and media festival. This year’s programme for children and youth has quite a few surprises in store as well.
